The split pills are a type of pelleted seed but the casing has a "pre-formed" crack in it to allow for faster germination. I found them to be excellent last season and will be using them again this one. The only drawbacks are that not all varieties are available in this form, and they are a bit (but not too much) more expensive.

I've been given an old water tank and I use that for growing red and green salad bowl, it's been very productive and I had salad leaves all last summer.
I found this a much more satisfactory way of growing lettuce, easy to keep permanently covered and protected from slugs and other nasties and easy to start off by sowing direct.

I also grow a selection of salad veg in a window box - lettuce leaves, raddish, etc. I kee it in the tunnel until looking good then stick it on the kitchen window sill for the next 3/4 weeks - outside. Then when that ones looking a bit tatty I bring another one up from the tunnel which was sowed about 3/4 weeks later. Works a treat!

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway.
