  • Asparagus...

    Hi everyone..just a quick question. I've just been given some asparagus crowns off a friend because she bought too many and i was wondering how far apart from eachother i need to plant them? thanks

    not sure if its the right advice but i plant mine 18" apart so in a couple of years when they grow(if they grow) there will be plenty of space. but i read some where that it dont reali matter you just get tastier or more crowns the closer or further away they are(not sure which way round though)

      Traditionally they are grown in rows of three with 18" between rows and 12" between plants.

      A double row you could get away 12" all round with alternate planting.

      The most important thing is to make sure you prepare the bed well. Double dug with All weed roots out and a good jollop of muck forked in. Never let the crowns dry out and put them in a bucket of water for a few hours before setting out. Don't put too much soil on top to start with just 2 or 3 inches and build it up to 5 or 6 by the end of the season. If you have heavy soil then add sand and form ridges for good drainage.

      Lots of effort now but the returns are worthwhile and longterm
