I have never found swedes easy to grow, and I think you are making it more difficult by trying to do it in pots. The big problem will be trying to keep the soil moist at all times as the first signs of drying out and they will bolt. Still good luck to you and let us know how you get on.

Ian, thanks for the warning -that's grand, I'll bear that in mind. I have decided to go for it - I LOVE neeps, drat it! - but I'll certainly watch the watering.

I'll post an update on this next year ... Hopefully not when they've bolted though ;-)

I can't even grow them in the ground My soil's too light for them.

Hmmmm, that's why I wondered if pots were an option ...

I've grown turnips in pots to be picked at tennis ball size and that works but swedes might be a different matter. They need a long growing season and will have to be kept well watered in dry weather. I like my swedes to be football size so VERY big pots would be needed. Still, nothing ventured....

Solway, I had the impression that home growers of swedes never achieve football size ... think someone told me that ages ago. Nonetheless, I am going to attempt it next year, already bought a packet of seeds! :-D
