Welcome to the Vine, ysb - I've sown some around then too (cloches) and they seem to be anywhere near harvest either. Don't worry, some clever grape will be along and let us both know - just wanted to say hi.

Hi ysb and welcome. In the summer they are very quick maturing taking no more than about six weeks to mature and are best picked quite young as you don't want them to bolt if it gets too hot. This time of year you will have to give them longer due to temperature and light levels. Be patient.

BTW if anyone is interested I grow Long White Icicle. Very mild even when quite large and supremely tasty.

I sowed some Long White Icicle last weekend (Aldi's ?). They're up already and I'm looking forward to seeing how they differ from the regular red varieties.

I've put some in the greenhouse border for the first time. I won't be putting my toms and peppers in there for some months so I'm using the soil for salad stuff. I usually grow radishes in the garden in a block, sort of broadcast, then use them as they're ready. This seems to make room for the later developers, as someone has already said.
BTW, long white icicle dipped in hummous is fantastic!

Finally, since last week, we've been able to harvest the first of the radishes. That makes it about 10 weeks!

My grand daughter of two and a half decided to try my first radish of the season on Saturday. It was a lovely red and white French Breakfast. She pulled it up and proudly took it to mummy to wash then spat it out because she didn't like it. I told her she wouldn't! I'll have to wait for the second.

At least she tried it Flum. Give her a couple of years and she'll probably turn her nose up despite all bribery offered.

I always tell Miss EB that it doesn't matter if she doesn't like the taste of something we've grown or cooked (or both) so long as she tries it. It doesn't always work but she's getting there and at her age children are apparently super fussy.

Radishes are a way of life down here in the Dordogne. Often get them as a starter with a 10/11 euro menu, large pots of radishes, bread and butter, lovely.

Harvested my first lot of french breakfast this weekend but looks like the slugs got there first as they were all nibbled managed to get about half a dozen edible ones which were wonderful

bright side, at least the chucks enjoyed the leaves. Time to get the beer traps out I think

Caitlin (above mentioned gradndaughter) will try anything. She sometimes doesn't like it first time but is willing to have another go. She has a huge range of favoured foods. You couldn't call her fussy. If I'd had some hummous in the fridge to dip the radish in, it would have disappeared PDQ. I've seen her eat hummous in industrial quantities with her fingers! I don't reckon gran's radishes stand much of a chance later in the season. Wait till she tries the Long White Icicle - and the Mooli!!

Harvested about a dozen scarlett globes for a BBQ salad last night.... Delicious!

A quick question about radishes. I planted some on 31/03/07 in a pot (with parsnips), and they sprouted 2 weeks ago and then grew quite quickly. The leaves look lovely and healthy, but tonight I have had a little dig around one or two to see if they were ready to harvest yet and I could not seem to find any?

How long are the stems from the leaves to the actual radish?

I have a feeling mine may have bolted with the lovely weather last weekend? Had intended to do a second sowing this weekend, but may end up being my first sowing instead!
