  • Please help...........

HI guys. I have been thinking about getting a wormery for the garden. I understand you can make fast compost with them.....

Does anyone have any recomendations please as to where to get them from and things to look out for please??

    Thanks....................XxX

Got my stuff from Wriggly Wriglers. Arrived by post very quickly after ordering. Sadly I lost my worms when I went on holiday and the house sitter did not do a good job of looking after them! (was winter time) Other than that, can't help much!

Have a look on Google. Loads of info there.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I have a wiggly wiggler wormery which I think is brilliant but pricey I think there are cheaper versions available that are just as good nowadays. I wouldn't say it makes compost quickly but what it does make is brilliant and it has the added bonus of giving you a liquid feed as well. Mine came with a coir mat for the top section but I got fed up of replacing it so frequently so I now use carpet instead although this does tend to keep it a bit on the wet side therefore attracting fruit flies.

Squirrel somewhere on here I put a link in for where to buy composting worms much cheaper than you can get them at wiggly wigglers, if you can't find it let me know and I will post it again

Thanks Zoe - will set up my wrigglies again I think - might as well use what I've got! Having said that I have the huge big bin version (got it about 7 years ago, before the days of can-of-worms) so might look at swopping for a smaller version as I now live on my own.

Look on ebay under compost - lots of worms for sale plus wormeries. I got my can o' worms from Wiggly Wigglers years ago and after replacing the worms twice (!) it is working quite well but you have to be carefull not to overload it with stuff and it needs protection from frost in the winter. Don't expect to get lots of compost either but yes it is fab stuff eventually.

We've also got a Can-o-worms wormery from Wiggly Wigglers (bought c.2000 its been thru two house moves) - ours still has our original worms (well their antecedents obviously! )

Its not the cheapest but it is very easy to use, and keep clean. We lift ours into the shed or garage for winter. Some of the other bins you see look very difficult to empty the compost out of. Our toms and aubs are loving the worm wee! I have seen websites using DIY stacker bins to make your own stackable wormery - you could try googling for plans.

                    top tip

right first of all you can use a normal compost bin to the same effect when i started my compost bin i just added some worms and it soon kicks off. You can get worms cheaply in a fishing shop just ask for a pot of brandlins or dendrobenas they are the best type and they soon breed well in a standard bin, mines been going for 4 years now i just top the worms up now and then after emptying the bin

Got my wormery from Original Organics in Devon. Reasonable price (~50 quid)
Looks like a small plasic wheelie bin. Composting of kitchen waste is not fast the worms do not have teeth so need to wait for the resident bacteria to partially decompose the waste. However, it is a fascinating hobby; the little darlings have their favourite foods.
My greyhounds are very fond of snapping up any worms that decide to make a bid for freedom; full of yummy protein, if you are a dog that is!
Have a go, you will not be disappointed
