  • Onion seeds going mouldy

    Hi there folks!
I have tried 3 times now to sow Thompson and Morgan Paris Silverskin Onion seeds, first time on the windowsill with propagater lid, then second time on windowsill without a lid, and now in my heated propagater with lid on in kitchen window. Every time the seeds have got a white thread like mould growing on the surface of the compost. The first 2 times I lost all the seeds to damping off. This time I have watered with 1 level teaspoon of Cheshunt Compound dissolved in luke warm water, but the mould seems to resist it. Can anyone tell me what is going wrong here and what I should do? The other 3 trays of seed in the propagater are fine and without the white mould stuff.

    HEEEELLLP!! Many thanks

Too warm and too wet, Eden.

Pre-germinated mine on damp (squeezed out) kitchen paper in plastic box with a lid and then planted when they had all grown a tail.

    Worked a treat

Oh dear, hope mine will be okay, they were sowed outdoors in a veg box filled with sieved soil, compost, manure and silversand to give a really light medium for them to grow in.

I'd use no heat - they are getting too warm and wet.

Should I cover mine (outdoors) to keep the rain off?

I think they'll be ok Shirley. If you think it's going to freeze hard, maybe cover them then.

Thanks Flum, if it is due to freeze hard (not something that we have happen often) I can carry the box to the greenhouse.

Onions don't need heat to germinate. Like everyone else has said
