  • My bargain of the day

Most of the caulis I grew at home fell prey to slugs, snails, caterpillars and/or wood pigeons last season I'm determined to get some to an edible stage this year and have just bought this from my mate who has a junk shop:

It's a pet hutch (obviously) but won't it be fab for growing vulnerable crops in? A bit of copper tape round each leg should see off the slugs and snails and only the tiniest of birds and butterflies could get through the wire. The tray bit slides out for emptying/cleaning at the end of the season and the top and sides both open for harvesting.

    Only a tenner too
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

You're gonna need to make a environmesh cover for it, else the wing-ed bugs will most assuredly lay their eggs on your brassicas!

'Interesting' idea - how on earth did you come up with that!

    A tenner?!!!

You could keep the two year old in that then you wouldn't have to worry about it straying or geting under your feet.

Even if you can't grow brassicas to full size, it makes a secure seed bed to grow things on in?

It's not big enough for most vegetables esp. chunky Brassica are out. I'm thinking more like strawberries (high value crops for relatively small space) so that birds can't feast on them. To stop slugs climbing up, stick towards the base of the leg with copper tape. Vine weevils (your worst strawberry enemy surely) could still try to climb up so use special barrier glue around the base again. Also supposedly they don't like water or sand but remember that they can still jump so you're looking at a biggish moat of water or sand against each leg . Prevention is still better than treating the vine weevils maggots decimating your strawberry plants.

                    I reckon it's bigger than some of you think - excluding the legs it's about 2ft x 2ft x 3ft.
