  • when to sow and plant

Hi, as a newcomer to growing my own veg, I was wondering if anyone can tell me where to obtain a good calendar/diary that will give a novice information when and what to sow and plant throughout the year. For example, I missed the sowing season for brussel sprouts by a month, and where I live young veg plants cannot be bought anywhere. Ok, I could trail through all my magazines, but it would be great to have an easy to identify sow and plant season calendar to hang on my wall.
    Waiting with interest, Sunflower

I found the info in Square Foot Gardening very useful, but you need to find you first and last frost dates and work out from there. I used this info in the book to make my own chart. But even if your a bit late, its worth planting a few seeds just incase. In Lincolnshire the first frost is supposed to be mid Oct but we havent been below 5C yet in Sleaford and its nearly Nov, so if I had planted something that needed 4 weeks before the first frost 2 weeks late ie beginning of Oct, it would be fine this yr but if the frost had come early it would have needed a lot of protection. hope that help

      When to sow and plant

      Hi Sunflower
Can't lay my hands on the magazine but I have read about a calendar/planting guide that relates specifically to veg sowing and planting. Will try and find it for you and let you know................

        Calander

        Sunflower,

This is quite a good online guide:

        http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_..._veg_index.asp

I think planting times are a guideline at best and should not be followed as gospal.

If you can offer protection eg greenhouse you can sow things like winter hardy spring onion, lettuce, radish, peas etc now.

You have nothing to loose by trying!

        Thanks
        Geordie

            sowing

            Hi
We have just had our first year of gyo with some success and some failures. We wanted to start last autumn but could not find anything to grow as it is all from late Feb onwards. This Month I have planted Garlic, Broad Beans and Japanese Onion Sets. They have taken already! The Broad Beans will rid the area of weed as a bonus. We bought the seeds, sets and garlic from a local garden centre. Also this year I have let a few plants go to seed and will use these to start next years crop, fingers crossed

I noticed today that the latest issue of "Garden Answers" magazine has on it's front cover, something about a veg growing guide for the year - might be worth a look.
