Hi i tried to grow spring onions last year,i followed all the correct procedures as per the packet but know matter how many times i tried i couldnt get them to germinate,i am new to veg growing is there any tips you can give or clues as to what i may have done wrong.Thanks Paul

They can be temperamental. Try sowing them in modules, 6 or so seeds per module and when they have sprouted and the roots have filled the module, plant each module out about 4" apart. Dont thin them out, just pull them as required.
It works a treat. Try the same method for beetroot, spinach, chard and maincrop onion seeds.

Spring onions are weird. I tried a few times over the years and they just about germinated, then took forever to grow. I gave up eventually and just had mini ones.
This year, I sowed a few in February into a plug tray thing which I kept indoors - they germinated beautifully and I put them out into the frost-free greenhouse, then potted them on into a large pot. They're bigger, for their age, than any other time I have tried before.
Why? No idea!
It's even the same seed - it's obviously maturing!
