  • Organic vegetable feed?

Is there any such thing, or is feed classed as organic anyway?

I've got some granules I've been using for my flowers but I need some feed for my vegetables.

Hello Gryfon, some feeds are chemical but if you want organic you can go for chicken manure pellets or make your own nettle manure. There were recent posts about it on the Vine or type netle manure into Google for the recipe.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

You could always try growing comfry... makes a fantastic liquid feed in two weeks if stirred each day or so. I'm making mine in a water butt so that I can decant through the tap straight into my watring can. But do keep a lid on the container as it doesn't half pong!

Lots of fertilizers are made from 'organic' ingredients, that is they are made from 'chemically organic' substances, ie not made up of inorganic compounds. I imagine they are cashing in on the 'true organic' market but they are not the same thing at all.

If you want to buy an organically certified fertilizer look for 'Soil Association' (or similar) approved stuff. It means the ingredients come from things that have been grown or raised (such as chickens, etc) organically.

Liquid nettle manure is very easy to make, all you need is a patch of nettles, bucket and water. I use old chicken pellet buckets, fill it first with nettles and then with water. Replace the lid and leave for a month or two (depending on the weather) and when you take the lid off you will get a very unpleasent smelling dark liquid (thats a pain to get the smell off your hands) that the plants love, dilute it first. If you have them to hand I also add rabbit droppings to help speed things along.
