Carrots

I have started a veg patch in my new garaden.

Looking good every saturday, digging over to loosen.
Potatoes in.

I have Courgettes in pots waiting, but I have a seed tray full of Carrot sprouts.

At what length, do I remove them from the tray and into pots.

The green stems look like they will break if I touch them.

What about leaving them a bit longer and then into bio-gradable posts and then straight into the ground.

Any assistance.

hi its best to sow straight into the ground with carrots or in a piece of gutter and then slide the lot out in one go

Welcome to GYO, Cocnee. As you say, carrot seedlings are very fragile, normally, you would sow them straight into the growing patch. I think I'd be tempted to try and slide out the seedlings in one lot onto the ground and let them grow into the soil, then replant when they are a manageable size. I think you're a tad early with your courgettes as well, don't be tempted to put them outside until after the last frost. I'll be starting my first batch in about 6 weeks.

Thanks for your advice.

I have the courgettes in posts on my kitchen window sill, along with strawberries.

Getting excited as I can grow things.

Will buy some bio-degradable grey pots and put 2-3 carrot seeds in each one and straight into the ground.

Do you know where their is a site to show when to plant and when to harvest.

Hi and welcome to the vine cocnee. It usually gives a guide on when to sow and when to harvest on the back of the seed packet. With your carrots, make sure you take measures against slugs and snails as they just adore the feathery green tops and will destroy all traces of your carrots in a very short time!

I've sown my Early Nantes in small patches under mini-cloches (made from 2l coke bottles with the bottoms cut off and the cap removed) - hopefully that will keep the slugs at bay for a while!

The slugs and snails will get in the top, keep an eye on them.

You're better off using the bottom half of the bottle, with a few air holes made by puncturing with a knife.

Thanks for the tips - I'll do that with the next batch, which will go on the lottie (not many slugs in my back garden, thanks to the chickens!)
