I had problems with the slime too I think its just important not to overwater them.
I found the best things to do to help them degrade and therefore not restrict the growth was to carefully put a small slit into the side of the tube just before planting into the growing hole.
Not sure how safe the microwaving would be

i use loo rolls for planting most things now if I run out of pots or seed trays etc. my windowsill is filled with them, full of sweet peas, beans etc. like the others i usually put them in left over containers to hold them upright and safe. only time they haven't worked for some reason is for planing my calabrese seedlings in them, the seedlings are dying. maybe something else is causing that though"A cat sees no good reason why it should obey another animal, even if it does stand on two legs."

re microwaving loo rolls. this kills anybugs which may be lurking. schools now accept loo rolls for art projects but microwave themfirst to kill germs so kids can use them safely.
everyone is saving their empties for me but as yet have forgotten to plant anything in them. might do peas tomorrow and some sweet peas. also collectiing familiespop bottles so havemore stuff than local recycling company.lol
bought somefab tiny watering roses from local car boots as well which fit a 2 litre pop bottle and have a fabulously fine spray so ideal for seeds and seedlings.
