tell me it's not too early to plant my potatoes!

I bought some Desiree seed potatoes a few weeks ago and have been happily chitting them, however, found today that there must have been a leak or something in my shed and about half of them have gone rotten.

I've put those on the compost and planted the rest, in the hope that they are still viable. I think we are going to have a frost this weekend so have covered them with fleece just to be on the safe side - hope that will be ok?

At least it gave me the motivation to clean out my shed, a job I'd been putting off for, well, the whole winter.

If you have planted them good and deep you should be ok. The foliage won't appear for a few weeks, by which time we should be frost free in these parts!

Personally, I wouldn't have put the rotten ones on the compost heap.

I have enough trouble with things like blight as it is, so I try to keep any dodgy spuds (as well as anything else that looks diseased) well out of the way.

I think they had just got wet, I don't think they were diseased - maybe I'll go and take them off though.

Last year I planted my first earlies on this date, (March 20th) but we were having glorious, warm spring weather. Today it's freezing cold, windy and raining - gardening eh?

They should be ok if planted at a good depth - aout 6" below ground level - and I then earth up a bit too, till they first show through.
