  • Extend your leek season

Any leeks still left in he ground, being bi-annual, will be starting to flower very soon.

To prevent this, and to clear ground for other crops, lift your leeks and then just heel them into a trench virtually next to each other, somewhere out of the way.

This process stops them from running to flower and they keep fresh and fit to use for weeks to come.

    Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice PW - just wish mine had reached a useable size What would be the cause of them not thriving at all?

Cheers Hazel, the ones I did year before were better, wondering if it was due to the soil not being cultivated for years before I planted these ones.

Weather wise it was an awful year for leeks, ours reached a usable size - just, and we just did what we'd been doing for years. It was a great year for onions though, they obviously enjoy a long, hot dry-spell followed by weeks of flooding.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I dug up all my leeks today, as they are starting to bolt. That'll be leek and potato soup all weekend then ...

Quiche is for puffs! Seriously, I hate quiche - it's that sloppy, not quite set texture that makes me barf. Plus, pastry is fattening. I prefer to get my extra calories from beer

BTW. my double-cropping technique worked really well again. Instead of digging up my leeks when they were ready, I sliced them off an inch below the soil. They regrow ... the bagfull that I dug out y'day to make way for French beans were all cropped twice.

Two Sheds, how long was it before the new leeks showed through (I'm wondering if they'll get trampled on if they're not really quick to come up, lol

I didn't really notice - a few weeks? I don't walk on the beds, so they wouldn't get trampled.
