  • how many spuds in........

a garden bag 41x41cm square x 48cm high? you know the sort, made from rot proof green plasticy stuff. I've discovered them in a local discount store for a £1 each and thought they'd be pretty good, having handles so they can be moved and hopefully last a while too.
I thought I'd probably put 3 in, what do you think? I'm growing International Kidney and Ulster Sceptre.

    Thanks in advance

Go on, stick four in - you know you want too!

I guess it depends on the compost though. If it's nice and rich you'll get away with more.

How many bags are you gonna get - if you can be bothered it might be worth a wee trial this year - put two in one bag, three in another and four in another and see which gives you the best results in terms of yield or preferred tuber size - that way you'll know for sure next year.

I used the bags last year, with excellent results, and I have just planted up my first of this year's tubers.

I put three spuds in each, but I am trying four of the small earlies this year. For maincrop I would stick with three.

I used the pots I got free from asda and tesco (previously had cut flowers in) and got lovely but very small new pots. Would go for no more than 3 in any container now. In Hull you can get those green bags free from the tip!

I put 3 'seeds' in the spud tubs - bought at huge expense last year - crops were 'quite' good but not spectacular. Someone here mentioned that extra space did not necessarily divvi up extra yield.

I've acquired the free resource of flower buckets - lots!- this year and will try just a single in each.

I guess that by the time the 4,3,2,and 1 peeps and their various containers get their crops at year's end, we'll have a consensus as to which might be best.

Best advantage of container grown veg is freedom from digging in/out. Containers will also give you some nice, near perfect examples if you wish to exhibit them - photographically - in the GYO end of term show. Hopefully they will run another this year? I've still got my proud moment of my Vivaldi and Magic Red spuds which my son captured on his mobile but we were unable to pass to the PC for entry....this year awaited with baited breath.

i was going to use empty 75 litre multipurpose compost bags with 3 seed spuds in each - this will be my first time at spud growing - obviously I don't think i will fill the bag right up (or should I) any hints / tips growing this way appreciated.....

I used old compost bags last year, probably 75ltr. I grew Charlotte and an unknown variety from a neighbour. I put in 3 and 4 spuds started them off on about 6/8 inches of compost with the bags rolled down then earthed them up and rolled the bags up until about 3/4 of the way up the bag then left them to it. I got a good few spuds this way. But I had them in a silly place a long way from water and they did dry out a few times......note to self.....keep spuds closer to water source!
