  • i always fail with mushrooms

i want to try mushrooms again but i always seem to fail. i have tried those box kits but they never work. but my plan is to have one of them in the house and also grow some in a unheated green house(when i have built it) so how and where is the best place to grow those box kits in my house any how, where, what to do in the green house

If you bought it half price it could have been too old. The main thing is they must be fresh as the spores do not have a very long shelf life.

... and being a fungus, they need to be moist. I would've thought an airing cupboard would be too dry?

Moist, cool and dark. Had some success with kits under the bed in the spare room.

Airing cupboard is prob too warm. They don't require too much heat. An outside shed should be OK.

I have one of the box kits, and it says to start it off somewhere warm, then once the fungus starts to develop, move it somewhere cooler.

Mine's on top of the beer fridge in the utility room (it's warm on top), then I'll probably move it into the shed when the weather warms up a bit.

As it stands, I have a couple of patches of the white "fluff" forming on top of the compost, and that's about 2 weeks in.

I put mine in the shed then realised too late that the roof leaks in a major way - drowned the lot!

Constant is the thing...about 14-18 deg C...Spare room cupboard or cellar is fine. Only ever water with mister of room temperature rainwater-and not too much of that.
