  • What not to put in a runner bean trench ??

Hi all, after making the mistake of planting onions next to my early peas(50 of the bu@@ers i have got to relocate tomorrow) i do not want to make a mess of my runner bean trench aswell.
I dug a 12 inch trench about a month ago and have been saving all my kitchen veg waste and have been adding it to the trench since then.
Is there anything i should definately NOT put in it ?????
    Thanks Minty X

I would guess composted runner beans might be a bad idea... not sure that anything else would cause a problem. The traditional additive is a recently-dead cat...

Everything has gone in it, all kinds of veg including, onion, banana, whole carrots, potato peelings, and cabbage.
One worry is that i have heard that you can almost grow potatoes from peelings, really don`t want that.

Imagines lamppost signs for lost cats in Paul's area!...I have buried roadkill rabbits or dead pets under grapevines or trees but they are a bit more long term eh.

I should put some straw of torn up newspaper i with it all Minty...Cats

i beleve the theroy of a bean trench is to keep moisture in around the roots and a low nitrogen feed as it produces to much leafy growth instead of producing beans / peas.

I personally put in rabbit / guinia pig cage droppings and newspaper and straw plus kitchen waste and try to get the nitrogen / carbon ratio in the trench higher on the carbon side so it leaches nitrogen out of the soil to compost the mixture.
carbon material is cardboard , paper , straw and hay.
I'm also adding seaweed to mine but that's because i have a beach close by.

Cant see my nieghbor being too happy with me if they saw me burying thier cats in my garden Paul... Still it would make a change from them crapping in it (the cats that is)

A lot of the old boys round here grow their beans in the same place every year. Goes against my logic, I have them as part of my rotation as a rule...Can't work it out. Any Ideas?

Pompeylottie....I looked up companion planting in Bob Flowerdew's bible...bad news: says peas and beans do badly with onions...Don't know why (except the shadeing issues..onions hate that)..he also says that beans hate onions khol rabi and sunflowers.
