  • Hybrid or OP tomato ?

    Hello all,

I bought couple more tomato seeds last week, some of them are clearly OP type but there are 2 toms whic I am not sure of, they are :
    -Balconi Red
    -Balconi Yellow

Are they OP or hybrid tomatoes ?
Help please as I don't want to save hybrid seeds .

    Many thanks in advance .

We grew Balconi Yellow last year and it looks like they've self seeded a fair bit around the garden...

      Paul,
Is it an OP or Hybrid tomato ? I bought it because of it's colour plus compact/ dwarf. Did it taste good ?

I think OP Momol, but am having trouble finding that out for definite. If our wild seedlings come true to type then it's good news!

They were very tasty though - one of the sweetest toms I've ever grown.

I found that the red ones tend to form a much bigger plant than the yellow ones - don't know why but certainly what I found when they were grown in the same conditions in hanging baskets last summer.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm quite certain they're not F1. I've never came across them being described as hybrids but Tumbler is the famous F1 which I refuse to subscribe to. Most trailing type tomatoes are thankfully OP.

I acquired Balconi too after reading up that they're sweeter/tastier than Gartenpearle.

Finger crossed for OP, Paul . Really pleased to hear that they have good taste (I will be waiting for your self seeded Balconi yellow confirmation ).
I also buy the current (red) type which said to be very sweet (pea size fruit) called Johannisbeer (I can't translate it,sorry).

Thanks for the confirmations Alison . Really looking forward to growing them .

Don't know yet . Truth is, I already got 11 tomato plants, each unique variety and more seeds have come my way. I only ordered the Balconi as I was putting out an order with Alan Romans and decided to chuck them in to save me P&P next year. Basically don't need Alan Roman order next year.

I will be growing Balconi along with many others this year. I will do a google after I have written this, see what I can find.

Looked and found it listed on a page where F1s were identified. Balconi is not so noted.
I believe that it is E European or Russian. More info when I have time. I am on my way to BG today

Many thanks Phreddy, I am waiting for any help I can find .

I bought my seeds from the local garden centre but because their main customers were/are German, most things are gear towards German. Unfortunately, one of the German hobby gardening site I found actually list them (the Balconi Red and Balconi Yellow) in Hybrid seeds, that is why I am curious and confuse . I hope that site is wrong.

Someone had to ask the obviously daft question.....what's OP?

I've sown balconi red and yellow too along with super marmande, black cherry and an italian beefsteak who's name I can't remember or pronounce!

None of mine have germinated yet though been a week now, hope I haven't killed them!!!
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!
