The Allotment Book

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I plumped for here since it's veg growing related!

When I subscribed to GYO magazine, I got a free book (thank you so much!) called The Allotment Book by Andi Clevely. I haven't had a chance to do more than flick through it at the moment, but when I did, my eye was caught by the photograph on page 61. And now I'm been driven up the wall with curiosity as to exactly what veg is in the picture! I've skimmed through the pages either side of pg 61 and can't see any reference to what it's showing. I've also skimmed through the index to find a reference to the page number, and can't find anything there either.

My poor Dad has more books on gardens/gardening than I've had hot dinners, I think he's going mad trying to figure out what these beans are!! Can someone out there please help me??

Yes I agree borlotto beans but I'm not sure of the variety..Firetongue perhaps?..Although if you flick forward to page 73 they have a photo of Rob Roy growing.

The colour can vary with green and purple to the white and red examples shown, the mottling, particularly on the seeds, gets stronger as they mature... Usually they are left on to ripen thus and used as haricots.

Good book though eh....I just got a bill with my subscription!

yep those are firetongue... known as Lingua di Fuoco if my Italian is up to it... you can buy them from Seeds of Italy:

lucky you, receiving your book, mine still hasn't arrived and I subscribed in October, when I call they just say I'll get it soon.

Do call them, it's a great book and well worth a little effort to remind them about it.

Oh stop it you lot, I feel like its an insurance company/bank...I persuaded the then editor Georgina back in 95 to give me a bag full of seeds for my subscription. I feel that everyone is getting a great book for their subs. What about loyalty hey!!! I think I'll have to switch the subs to Mrs P or my neighbour to get these sweeteners.

PS I'm sure you'll get the book so Leave Paul Wag. alone it not up to him, He just writes for them these days.
