  • silly question re pepper seeds

with the sucess of my one seed of physalis germinating yesterday I have decided to plant a few veg seeds in my new propergator and see what happens.

I bought some red pepper seeds from GC and was (rather stupidly!) amazed to see that the seeds were the seeds you get inside a pepper! for some reason I just didnt equate the too! Well I am a bit blonde! So this is my question- can I just save the seeds from peppers I get from shops or is it like the fact that you cant grow potatoes from shops becauss of the disease resistance etc?

You can try growing the seeds from peppers (and other stuff) you buy from the shops. There are some drawbacks - you don't always know 'exactly' what you're growing. If the original is an F1 hybrid variety then its seeds will not necessarily produce them same thing that you bought in the shop. If the seeds are from 'open pollinated' veggies then you should be growing what you bought.

If you've room then give it a go. I only occasionally try because of lack of space I like to be sure of what I'm growing.

last year i grew peppers from seeds i saved from shop bought peppers - the plants grew, plenty of flowers, not many peppers tho - i've been told i they needed pollinating (they were in the greenhouse)
this year i have 60+ seedlings, all grown from the seeds saved from the peppers from last year - fingers crossed they'll be ok

Depends on which variety of pepper seeds you bought. The pepper you buy from your supermarket, a typical bell peppers are actually quite difficult to grow at home to the extent of looking like shop bought quality, shape and size and possibly won't be profilic in yield that they don't normally warrant growing unless you're a commercial grower.

I was caught out too and bought that 'California Wonder' pepper, so common, so boring and too 'conventional looking' pepper that's too risky for home growing. I now only go for smaller fruiting variety and some described as patio peppers (with lots of small fruits on the seed packet). Cubanelle type of peppers are supposed to be prolific cropper, shaped more like blunt chillies but each plant could hold more fruits. If you did buy a 'California Wonder' or similar, you could have taken the risk and just used seeds from your supermarket peppers.

Hello MrsB, you can grow from the peppers or tomates you get from the supermarket, but they may not come true to type. But if you've got the time and space why not try. What's a seed in a pot ? I'm giving a supermarket long pepper a go in among my other stuff. Will be interesting to see how it gets on.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

            thanks

thought it may be something like that! the seds I have bought are called 'granny smith' . So from what you are saying then, if these grow into nice big plants and fruit I cansave the seed from these ones as they dont say they are F1? mind you with the amount of seeds in the packet I bought I will have enough for next year anyway
