  • Running for the seedlings :(.

    Hello All,

I really mean running for them . Since yesterday I start taking my seedlings (tomato, pepper, chili, tomatillo and squash seedlings) out for more sunshine and better fresh air as the windowsills are too crowded. The trouble is I have to run for them when it suddenly rain (I don't have green house and my mini plastic greenhouses are fully occupied too).
I managed to set a mini tunnel (home made cloche) for them last afternoon and this morning they are under their emergency plastic mini tunnel.

Please share your tips, how you managed raising heat loving plant early with out having any green house ?
I know it is my own fault to raise them early as I haven't got any proper place for them but it is a challenge and surely fun seeing them grow.

Many thanks and have fun sharing the laugh .

Sorry momol I've got a greenhouse, where I've just put our repotted toms.

For protection do you have any of those cheap tunnel cloches - they were about £4 from Lidl? Or can you rig some sort of plastic/polythene roof, like a small gazebo?

      Running is good for you.

I prefer a quick skip, though, myself

They got some plastic cover SBP and I am so glad not to run under the rain again .

CC, I like the real running as sport but during summer and when it is dry. It does give me a good laugh though .

Although I've got a greenhouse I don't use it much at this time of year as most mornings it's too cold when I go out for work. At the moment the smaller plants are on the utility room window ledge and the rest are in the conservatory, it's getting pretty full now with a large table covered in plastic sheeting and a load of staging also. Fortunatley they can still get plenty of light and it's not too warm for them so they all seem to be going well.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I bring them out because not just crowded issue but also to let them get cooler air as indoor temperature is constantly 19 to 20C and I want them to grow compact and sturdy (also to harden them). It became such a urge when I saw the tomatoes start to form mini flower buds and the tomatillos blooming, yet they are only around 20 cm tall (maximum). Luckily I don't have to run again untill they reach the height of their emergency mini tunnel .

I was going to say fleece, then remember they let water through. How about bubblewrap if you can support them or maybe you can get away without support. Or you could lay a rack or chicken wire etc over 2-4 bricks high (like your makeshift BBQ) and cover over with bubblewrap, presto a quickie coldframe.

                Veg,

Remember the fence wire we use for cloche ? I am using them as the emergency tunnel and I give plastic cover on top of it.
