Would an old square washing up bowl be big enough for my little boy to plant one squash or pumpkin in?

I don't think a washing up bowl will be big enough for squash/pumpkin. They say it's best to grow them in the ground but they can sprawl like mad, not ideal if you have limited space. I believe that it's still possible a grow squash successfully in containers, just have to make sure they're very big.

I've thought of those rubbery type flexi tub trug with handles (40 litres) that you find in Wickes (or similar type stores) but I'm sure I saw one at Instore/Poundstretcher for £1.29 although the quality might not be same as Wickes £4 one. At this size it's easily big enough, more than generous even. Also consider some of the bigger storage boxes, easily big enough.

I'm sure my dad used to make flower containers out of old car wheel/tyres. He (I think, from memory) used to cut round the circumference of the tyre (whilst still on the wheel) and then fold the tyre outwards. I think he even painted some white.

Brilliant idea - I've been wondering how to support the Environet I've just invested in (2007 was a bad year for our brassica's - if the pigeons didn't fancy them, the caterpillers cleaned them off). LOVE the tennis ball idea!

So you really can poke holes on these balls, will they last as well as the expensive bought stuffs (great idea but pity about the price). Any other balls that can be used for putting together a frame for fleece/netting etc.

How about small blocks of wood drilled with holes to put through canes ?

I do exactly this as it works really well - last year I done it with sunflowers and they managed to root into the ground aswell. I also use painted white tyres to use as flower tubs and they look great. I'd really like to get my hands on some tractor tyres that would really work well!

I'm using a polystyrene box that was used to deliver frozen food as my cuttings bed at the moment. I had tomatoes in it last year.

I have some builders trugs (including a pink one ) that I use as planters. Also a couple of old recycling boxes (pre wheelie bin), a bathroom sink and a plastic dustbin. My favourite is an old 'stove style' electric fire, which I've planted with red hot pokers, flame lillies etc (geddit? ).
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery

How would you cut through the rubber? Is it easy? (Showing how unpractical I am!) Magpie & I have loads of tyres that I got from the side of the road yesterday - painting them white sounds a good idea too.
