  • how much compost on my beds?

I've been digging over my beds and sifting on some of my homemade compost (which I must say has turned out very well! I'm very pleased with it.) I turn over the ground with a fork, sift a layer of compost and then use a 'twisty fork' to dig it in.

My question is, how much should I be putting on? I've got an enormous amount of it, and 2 beds full already of onions and potatoes. Can I put too much on?

Also, it has turned out well, as I think I said earlier crumbly and moist - can I use it as potting compost, do you think?

many thanks, I'm sure there are plenty of compost gurus on here who can help.

When I took my present plot on the soil was like talcum powder absolutely lifeless and no body to it I have poured tons of manure, leaf compost as well as my own made compost I have 11 compost bins running on the plot I fill these with manure, weeds and veg trimmings, this has done no harm to my plot so I would say keep going with your compost.

Sounds like it will be good for earthing up your potatoes! Otherwise, save it up and put a nice thick layer on any bed that has well-developed plants in it, to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. I wish I could get the hang of composting...

I did use compost last year to earth up my potatoes, Paulw, and thought, 'this is so wasteful' but I've got so much of it now! thanks for the advice though, it's always good to have what you're doing confirmed by someone else, isn't it?

I think I will use it as a mulch as well - time to build another bin, I guess!
