growing onions

I've read that the time to start growing onions from sets is March so am I too late to buy some sets and start them half way through April?

grow them from seed! cheaper but no we have not planted our sets out just yet..........

My sets came a couple of weeks ago but the lottie won't be ready for a week or so; an mine will be going in then. I grow onions from sets and seed, pretty much all year round.

I got 2 seven year old helpers to plant my onion sets yesterday, so unless they are upside down, we should have plenty of onions this summer.

Whatever the mean planting time stated on the packet gardening is necessarily dependent on the weather. Onions are quite daylight sensitive but I don't think you are too late.

you have got till at least the end of the month , but if you plant next month they will still grow but may not be as big when they get to maturity.
Don't worry about exact timing as the month depends on your area and just get them planted when you have time.

i got some red onion sets (Red Baron) which said they were best planted late, so I haven't put those in yet. Not sure exactly how late is late, but I was thinking towards the end of this month.

I put mine in about 3 weeks ago and since it's been so cold, not much has happened - you'll be fine I think, now that it's warmewd up a bit (sigh, more snow on the way).

my onions are showing a good 3" above the soil, and with there being signs of snow this weekend should I cover them or will they be ok?

I planted some red onions in really late april last year, poss early may... they were fantastic - prize winning in fact!!!!!

I planted my red onions 2 weeks ago (Red Baron) but I only BOUGHT my yellow ones (centurion? good for storing anyway) today and won't get to the plot until at least Tuesday next (the second brand new lock has also had a key broken in it less than 24 hours after being put on, and locksmith can't get replacement until tues as needs at least 100 keys). Hopefully this time the LA will put up a SIGN with the new lock!!

Anyway, I seem to recall my sets were well into April last year and I had plenty of growth with them. I am still going through them too - 1 string of 10 left in shed and the second last was started last weekend in the kitchen.

I put my Sturon sets in two weeks ago but there is no sign of life at all yet - cant decide whether they're in too deep (planted about 2" deep) or have rotted with all this rain I shall have another go next weekend, good job I saved some.

I'm relieved to hear that - I just ordered some Red Baron sets to try, since I'm enlarging my cultivated area a bit at the moment. Fingers crossed they will get here in a few days, as next week is the "root" phase in my moon calendar.

I just planted Sturon sets last weekend into compost in cold greenhouse. In a couple of weeks I will transplant them outside into growbags,( I have white root fungal disease throughout my veggie plot soil.) First time trying this, found idea on vine chat from a few years ago.
