  • newbie questions?? THe snows coming!

    HI there

I am new to all of this and have my plot warming up under cover in my garden and lucky enough to have a greenhouse and a heater!! I have a few questions please.

    1. As the snow is coming my strawberry plants are doing well already in pots, shall i move them to the greenhouse for a short time? I dont want them to die on me!!

    2. My toms are also in the greehouse growing really really nicely, i have covered them over with bubble wrap, should they be ok?

    3. I also have a pastic greenhouse in my glass greenhouse with my seedlings in, as long as i keep it heated at night will they be ok. I have them in propagators or covered over with bubble wrap as i only planted them last week, shall i leave them in the greenhouses heated.

THanks very much, there is only so much you can learn from a book, and i have already learnt so much from this site.

    Cheers

I would say move your strawberries in - it looks like we might have a real cold snap.

If your greenhouse is heated then most things should be ok, though I'm a bit worried about your tomatoes. If there's nowhere else for them you will just have to wrap them as best you can.

My toms are coming into the house for the weekend, they are out in plastic "Growbag house" at the moment but in pots. My strawbs have been left in a growbag outside all winter exposed to the elements and they are just starting new growth now, spect they'll be fine but I suppose they're used to it!!

My strawbs were fine outside in the snow at the start of March - have got green leafy growth. I think I read that strawberries do better if kept outside in the cold - perhaps wiser grapes could comment on this.

Welcome to the vine squashysu! The only tip I can give you is that if you have staging in the greenhouse move the toms onto this as it's usually a few degrees warmer than the greenhouse floor! Still cover them tho!

                thanks everyone for the welcome,

i will now move the toms to the staging and hope for the best as at the moment they are really healthy and i am so pleased with them. Everything in my little plastic greenhouse is starting to germinate, so covered that with bubblewrap as well , if not in a propagator.

Cor, i am so enjoying this, my friends keep calling me "Barbara" from the Good Life !!!! lol, but they wont be laughing when they are eating my lovely organic veg and fruit!!!

also, i have brought the strawberries in, but they can go out again after the weekend, some are really small so dont want them to die on me!! better to be safe i suppose.

                Thanks everyone

It may come to nothing as the weathermen have re-vamped there prediction to light rain instead of heavy snow in my area!
