Not true, Although they often throw some leaves but a bean stick will not last the season.

I have planted hazel bushes on my plot (Saturday) 3 of them, they are just 'sticks' at the moment
      Kentish cob
      cosford ----?
      pearsons prolific I think

these were plated for their nuts and for hazel 'rods' to use in the veg patch. Seems greener than bamboo, as you say its about air miles!
anyone grown any of the above please?

I'm not sure what the trees are that grow beside my house (on our land as it trns out), but each year we cut them back and I end up with these ruddy long - and fairly straight "branches" ranging from about 6-8ft long. I'd always thrown them away, unti lthis year I thought I'd keep them and use them as bean supports.

They have little black "buds" on them, and the bark is fairly smooth and slightly grey in colour. My own little coppice?

          Maybe elderberry?

yes there are coppicers locally in every part of the country - you should be able to find your local one by going to allotment Forestry Home page.

Ash? Look the business anyway. So long as you don't strike the cuttings and get a thicket!

I think we have a winner. Just looked up Ash tree, and the leaves in particular (they aren't full trees as we have to keep cutting the tops off), and they look very similar to those I find in my garden.
