It's probably too late for this year, I'm afraid. You could try, but it might not work.
Garlic needs a few weeks of cold weather to enable it to split properly into cloves so it probably should have gone in a good few weeks ago.
If you want to try it (autumn is probably best), just split the bulb up and individually place the cloves in the ground or in pots, about an inch or two deep, pointiest end up.
No peeling required.

it would be a very garlicky spag bol if you used a whole garlic in it..
I would make the spag bol using 2 or 3 cloves then plants the rest of the cloves.
Dont peel them for planting just split into individual cloves and plant about 6 inch apart the same as you would onions so the tip is at soil level.

I also wouldn't use garlic from the supermarket. they've often been treated, or harbour diseases.. same reason, really, as why you don't plant supermarket spuds. You *can* get away with it, but its not recommended.
Get garlic for planting from seed companies. but if you want to have a go for this year, try in pots, that way if it does turn out to have a disease, less chance it'll spread, and harvest the leaves, like you would chives, and get some garlic bulbs from the seed companies to plant in autumn.

Snadger: can only pass on what i've been told (about the garlic)!! This is my first year of growing them, and i really hope you're wrong - about the supermarket growing better - as i've about 20-30 of them growing in the garden now (from a seed company).. yep, we like garlic too! we get through about 2 bulbs a week between us.. if i had the space i'd sow more.. lol.. fab stuff! am growing garlic chives too. may have a shot at growing some supermarket garlic in a pot, for the leaves in saladLast edited by kethry; 09-04-2008, 11:29 PM.
