Don't give up on them just yet. For goodness knows what reason, I put 5 potato tubers in a barrel - at the start of November. Against all odds they grew only to 'die a death' in the first frost of the year. I was going to dump the lot when I noticed they had rejuvinated. When frost threatened again I covered them with soil (no green showing) - they're up again!

As soon as potato foliage comes through, cover it will compost or soil. The earthing up process is partly done to prevent green spuds near the surface, but mainly to keep frost off the top growth. At this time of year it's worth checking as often as you can and raking up the soil from either side to cover your greenery completely. It'll be back!

Didn't we all say not to plant your potatoes too early (just jealous, cos I only got mine in this week)

Just 'cos Monty does it doesn't mean we all have to rush out. Mine went in yesterday.

The leaves on my spuds are turning black and dying. Is this cos of the frost? Can I do anything to help them?

Please could someone clarify, when you earth up exactly what are you covering? Mine haven't come through yet, so I'm not even sure what to look out for. Will they look like seedlings with greenery or will they look like chits? And does everything get covered up?

                        Thanks.
