had to go to work this mtoday the potatoes have had it dead on th efloor are the stems, will the potatoes grow new one or shall I pull them up as my allotment shop has said he will put some lady crystal buy for me
Don't give up on them just yet. For goodness knows what reason, I put 5 potato tubers in a barrel - at the start of November. Against all odds they grew only to 'die a death' in the first frost of the year. I was going to dump the lot when I noticed they had rejuvinated. When frost threatened again I covered them with soil (no green showing) - they're up again!
As soon as potato foliage comes through, cover it will compost or soil. The earthing up process is partly done to prevent green spuds near the surface, but mainly to keep frost off the top growth. At this time of year it's worth checking as often as you can and raking up the soil from either side to cover your greenery completely. It'll be back!
got all my spuds int he unheated greenhouse they have been there since mid feb as they are all first earlies salad potattoes, i grew saladin last year outside in an odl plastic dustbin and got a bumper crop, doing the same with carlford this year as well, the ones in the green house are going guns just keep earthing them up and when a frost is forecast cover with fleece, will be putting them out as my last chance of frost is 1st of may. got yukon gold to plant out 1st of june as my friend is donating another plastic dustbin on the side witing to be planted
Please could someone clarify, when you earth up exactly what are you covering? Mine haven't come through yet, so I'm not even sure what to look out for. Will they look like seedlings with greenery or will they look like chits? And does everything get covered up?
Thanks.
