pinching out butternut squash

In the past when I've grown butternut, I've not pinched out the end, just let them grow and grow, and I find you get some sideshoots anyway.

Would it be better to pinch out the ends, encourage sideshoots and hope for a heavier crop that way, do you think?

Don't know about the yield, I just stop them when I want them to go in a different direction to another crop that I don't want swamped.
