  • Leeks - can they be grown in big pots?

I'm thinking ahead about how I can utilise my big pots that my first salad potatoes will have been harvested from in June. I'm thinking leeks but as i've never grown them before, can anyone advise whether a pot of height 40cm will be deep enough and with a diameter of 40cm I'm guessing I can only grow 2 or 3 in a pot?

I was going to sow in root-trainers and plant out in the pots after potato harvest in june.

But if leeks are out of the question, has anyone else got any ideas about what to grow in the big pots?

    Hi
Haven't tried leeks in ex-potato pots, I turn mine over to Autumn King Carrots.
Once you've emptied out the potatoes, pick out as much root as possible, break up the compost ( I ad a handful of composted manure) and plant your carrots. They do very well like this and easy to cover with fleece against carrot root fly too.
I did try leeks in large containers but that was during the drought summer and the watering was continuous.

Last year I grew runners in big pots - just popped in 3 canes to make a wigwam and they grew brilliantly. I also did a variety of salad leaves, radish and beetroot, all came out fine.
