i run 365 day harvesting as I grow year round; but tis good to see early crops. My tomato now has about 6 open flowers, so hoping for earlies [even if they are just on vege bacon toasties]. A few weeks yet but still exciting to see them coming on so early.

Yep we had our first radishes yesterday and our spring cabbage needs about another week or so" If it tastes like chicken THEN EAT CHICKEN " :- Kermit The Frog

Also harvesting radishes and salad leaves - but from the greenhouse, not the garden.
We're down to our last 3 leeks, some swiss chard (just starting back into growth), perpetual spinach and the scabby end of the kale plants. Need to work on my all year round cropping plan for next year!Last edited by T-lady; 10-04-2008, 12:52 PM.Cheers

The axj household has been feasting on radishes now for the last couple of weeks, fantastic. They took about 4 weeks to get to eating size... never grown them before, but the flavour just stays in the mouth for hours. The kids get home form school and the first thing they want to do is hunt for radishes, it's all from a window box, so they just lean out of the kitchen window. I am sure the locals think we are mad, everyone else grows flowers, has mini rock gardens or cacti LoL... If you can't eat it, or use it for medicine, don't bother is my motto. Well, that in an appartment anyway, different in a rambling garden :-)

I should have mentioned in the previous post... made one major mistake with our radish crop. A friend has a riding school, so I though great, organic fertiliser, i.e. horse manure. When I was prepping the window boxes (NB these are built in to the fabric of the building, a good four feet deep by eight feet wide by two and a half feet out.) I added some axj dung. Oh bother, radishes don't like manure, well actually they love it, fantastic display of leaf, many radishes as thin as a pencil, even after five weeks. Happily we didn't put too much manure in, so plenty of radishes grew great. But a warning to all, if you've whacked in some manure, don't get too excited about a bumper crop of root veg.
I learn from trial and error LoL

you'll see their little red heads peeping from the ground, just brush around the base of the stalk below the leaves, if you don't see the dome of the radish, leave it be. When they get really big they almost climb out of the ground by themselves, although for many people they are a bit hot and woody by this stage. Ideal size is between half an inch and three quarters. I have pulled some in error and stuck them back in and they have carried on just fine, resilient little things, and of course you can keep sowing the little angels all through the year. Hope that helps =8¬)
