  • How many Cherry Tom plants.........

    Can I plant in 12" and 16" hanging baskets?
    I'm growing Balconi and have never used hanging baskets for Toms before.

    Thanks in advance for your advice.

    I'm growing these too - it says on the packet that one plant will fill a 12" basket

      I grow tumbling toms and usually put 1 per basket, it looks small at first but the roots will fill the basket by midsummer. When that happens it's difficult to stop them drying out as the water tends to pour straight through so try adding water retaining gel mixed with the compost. Also you can water using ice cubes which melt gradually so the water gets a chance to seep in - I havn't tried this yet though so go carefully.

        Oh B**ger! I was hoping to put in 3 per 16", looks like I'll have to get a few more baskets then!!

          Peanut, you may get away with two in 16", I only have 12" baskets (size isn't everything they say). I'm also trying tumblers in largeish pots to see if the extra root space helps.;

            Yes I think I'll try for 2 in the 16" and 1 in the 12". Do you think that the "Tall Tom" Pots would work for these kind of basket Tomatoes? 1 plant in each?
