potting toms

hi all
i got tomatoe plant with flowers on .but its omly in a 5 inch pot will it be ok to repot it now [or in a few weeks]to its final growing pot [10 litre pot]

i think you let the flowers turn to fruit then pot on staraight away and feed

Pot them on now, if they seem too big for the 5" pot (are roots growing out the bottom?). I presume you're keeping them somewhere frost-free and light?

hi sbp theey not to big for pots yet maybe a couple of weeks or so they are in a heated green house will they be ok to pot on when they have more flowers on

I don't see why not. But ours tend to go from module to 10cm pot to soil/greenhouse border. I'm sure someone else will come along with a definitive answer, but if they're healthy and growing they should pot on okay any time, just try not to let them get 'root-bound' and don't over pot - but they'll get to be big plants. So when they've established in a 5" pot potting to a 10" pot should be fine.

Sounds like they're doing really well john. Tomatoes are pretty strong plants, they'll grow despite your best efforts!

What variety are they - next worry will be 'pinching out side shoots'!?

hi spb they are moneymaker [my sister got them for me]didnt realise there was so many different kinds .will try something different nxt year . wat would you recomend?
pinching side shoots out is another question for you if you dont mind how big do i let them grow b 4 pinch out im scared in case i pinch out ones with flowers

There are soooo many tom varieties, but I'd recommend you try a black tomato - maybe something like Black Prince or Black Krim.

Re: 'pinching out' toms. There are (mainly) two types of toms indeterminate/cordon and determinate/bush.

Side shoots from indeterminate (cordon) varieties are pinched out. Not everyone does though.

How to prune your tomato plants with pictures.

Click on the drawing of the tomato plant and it loads a picture showing a photo of side-shoots.

Pinch them out as soon as you want, if they get really big you can pot them up and they'll make a new plant.
