  • Spuds and allotments

Just about to take on a 3/4 allotment plot which at present is brand new and is basically just a ploughed field. Now, I reckon the best thing to do is initially grow loads of spuds, and would like to know what the latest time for growing main crop is?

Are you really going to eat that many spuds? If I had that much room already dug over, I'd be putting lots of various stuff in, not a monocrop. Each to their own though.
The time between planting and lifting for late main crops should be about 20 weeks, so plant them five months before your first frost at the latest (If there are any left in the shops!): that would be early May for me. I have some Pink Fir Apple waiting to go in.

Its quite roughly ploughed and will need digging over to break up the great clumps. I thought to store some spuds, but basically to use the plot to grow low maintenance veg as I have a largish garden with G/house and P/tunnel for high maintenance stuff. Perhaps I should of put this thread in the allotment slot, as I guess what I am really after is advice on starting the lottie up?
