If anyone grow's Kale, can they tell me , what is the best way to sow them,
- straight into the ground, or start them off in modules indoors ?
It's all a matter of personal preference coachman. What types are you growing?
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
I can't sow anything direct on the plot, because the wildlife eats it all. Everything gets started in cell trays in the greenhouse.
Kale won't get sown until mid-late May.

Can't stand cell trays myself, can never seem to get the plants out once they have grown. I usually sow into 1lt pot then transplant into individual 9cm square pots. Then finally plant out when they look strong and healthy. Takes more time but I get good results
I sow in modules or half seed trays. My black tuscany is now at the seed leaf stage and loking healthy - it's in the coldframe. It won't be ready for planting out for a month or two.
Thanks for all replies, I will be growing 'Frosty'
and 'Nero de Toscana Precoce'.
This is the third year in succession I've had problems growing Nero De Toscana(Tuskan Kale) It always throws up seedheads prematurely methinks. I love the stuff but will try growing it in containers in the greenhouse over winter!

I were thinking of growing Kale as my main winter leaf crop this year. What sort would you recomend for a newbie an when should i sew if it want to start it in modules please?
Everyone will have his or her own favourite, and they're all good, but for my part you can't beat Pentland Brig. As to when, any time from now till late summer.
