Probably a stupid question

Hi there,

I am very new to gardening of any form, however, last year I successfully planted and raised Tomatos and Pepper plants. This year I have been branching out (if you will excuse the dreadful pun) and am growing potatos in some fabric growing pots. I planted seed potatos, and have followed the instructions, and have been topping up the levels of soil in the buckets as the plants have been growing. My question is this.

Do I need to thin out the tops of the plants as I was advised to do with my tomatos? I have done some reading, but dont see any references, so do I just leave the plants to do their own thing?

Welcome - leave them to it! They are related to toms but don't have the same growth habit.

I grew some in pots last year and just left them and I had a good boiling from each pot, with no need to peel them either.

Hi, am new to and have also tried potatoes this year. My question, yes stupid but relevant as I to an female! is has anyone ever tried growing them in old car tyres? Saw some trees planted in some at the Ideal Home Exhib this year so have planted my tatters in some. Just wondering if they'll grow, hmmmm!

I saw an article on using tyes somewhere and as the foliage grows, you add another tyre and fill up with soil, then just repeat the process

yancc - the only problem I see with growing spuds in car tyres is when you come to have to hump another one on top, no problems if:
a) you have a chunky man in tow
b) you are a weight lifter
c) your back is sound

I reckon they'd be buggers to keep well watered too. Get a bit of sunlight (unlikely as it may be) on those black rubber tyres, and it'd soon heat up in there.
