  • Any sign of your spuds yet?

I planted 5 rows of earlies (pentland javelin & rocket) on St. Patricks day, March 17th. There is no sign of any growth yet and I was wondering if it was different for anyone else in other parts of UK.
p.s I live in the Manchester area & I earthed them up at time of planting so they do have to grow more before breaking through.

I earth up when planting too. My spuds in the ground - planted a bit later than yours admittedly, but not much - week or so - are not showing yet. Panic not - they'll come. The ones in pots in the greenhouse are going mad though - Mid May spuds there I hope!

        Hi

I planted my Aaran Pilot in the middle of March and they are just coming through, they are covered by clear plastic strips.
It was very cold when I planted them, but it was the school holidays so I gave it a go.
The shoots were too long, from chitting in the dark, but fingers crossed.
I have some others planted later, not showing; and main crop still waiting to be planted.

I planted some Arran Pilot at end of March, 3 spuds in to 8 old compost bags, earthed them up last weekend, keeping the bags in greenhouse till frost over then will put bags out in garden to grow on.

I planted mine in buckets mid March but no sign of them yet. Well it has been a cold spring and they will appear. Last year I was eating them in May, but the spring was very different and they were planted much earlier.

I planted 2 buckets of spuds at Easter (Charlotte and Red Duke of York) and they are now all up and running. I planted some more a couple of weeks later (Maris Peer) and still waiting for them to show themselves.

We're quite a bit further south, and haven't had too bad a time of it with the weather here.

Planted a compost bag with 4 earlies (swift I think) mid March and have planted out others in 2 week sucsessions (sp).6 bags in all, mixture of swift and Charlotte. So far 3 bags with leaves showing. The first to show has been earthed up twice and just showing through again.

I have absolutely no idea what is happening with my spuds this year.

They seem very reluctant to chit, no signs in the garden, and still not much going on with the ones yet to be planted.

                      Very different to last year

I put pent firth into a big plastic pot on the 1st March. It was not chitted, just had the small eyes it had from the shop. Bit of an experiment really but it is now about 8" clear ot the earth and has been earthed up a couple of times. Just praying we don't get any more frost, it has been covered in bubble wrap to protect it a couple of times but has been outside the whole time since it was planted. I expect to get spuds from it around 2nd / 3rd week of May.

yeah i was worried too -plantedmine far too early (late feb) thought the frosts had got them but they have just started appearing I thought if I planted early (and they were earlies) id get them sooner, but guess they come when their ready. My neighbour did the same with different varieties and they are just peeking through as well.

Planted Winston,Charlotte and Belle De Fonterey in tubs and containers in greenhouse on 16th March. All are up and growing well.

Planted Winston, Charlotte and Duke of York in rows outdoors about 5" deep at the bottom of trenches. They aren't up yet and hopefully won't show there heads for a couple of weeks yet! If they do I'll just have to cover the foliage over with soil if frost is forecast.

Might get a few maincrop in next weekend!
