  • Double planting Pink Fir Apple Potatoes ?????

    Hiya,
It appears to my excitement i have far to many PFA seed potatoes than i have space for and as the yeilds can be quite low.....
What to the idea of planting them two at a time ?????.

This sounds so simple it has to be a bad idea

They are pretty big plants Minty but you might reduce spacings and cut some of the top growth/ rub off all but two chits. Not that convinced about the double planting idea though

Try and swap some with someone for something else...might be handy

Ive got loads of PFA's and I ordered Rattes! They are not a bad spud though. Just found them a bit annoying in the kitchen. I didn't think the yield was too bad but they do take a good 16-18 weeks.

I would just plant them closer together, even as close as 12 inches apart.!

If you haven't grown PFA before be aware that what they lack in potato size they make up for in tops! My last lot were about 5 foot high!I should have staked them earlier than I did but I still got a good crop.

          Good luck minty!

I have always had heavy yields from Pink Fir Apple and it certainly is one of the best waxy potatoes. Epicure and PFA are two that I plant each year.

The general principle is: the more shoots you have coming up at each planting station, the fewer good-sized - and more small - spuds you'll get when you harvest them. Planting two tubers together simply increases the number of shoots that are going to grow at each station. You won't get any increase in the subsequent crop - just more little ones.
