  • Tomato Plants

I have been growing on my toms in my dining room with the heat off. I have finally got my second greenhouse up and running and the temp at night at the moment isnt too bad - will it be ok to put them out now into the greenhouse as they are getting a bit leggy and one sided in the dining room (alkso could do with my dining room table back)

Yep, get them out there - mine are sunbathing atm! Just try and acclimitise them to the lower night temps gradually over a few days and fleece them up as well. Oh and check they don't get too much sun either!

Mine are out in the greenhouse, they get too leggy indoors. Downside is that the cold stops growth and mine are still stuggling to get past the 2 leaf stage.

Don't go straight from indoors to outdoors permanently - do it gradually over a week or so.

They need to be protected from wind, cold temperatures and strong direct sunlight until they have toughened up.

Here's my baby toms in our unheated g/h. They stay out overnight now, but they get covered with fleece just in case it gets very cold.

I know - I meant to write this.

You still need to do it slowly.

SBP, great tomatoes, when did you sow your seeds?

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

*checks veggie diary* Most of them where sown on 24th February, potted on into 10cm pots on 1st April. Only just in the past few days started leaving them down the g/h all the time. Looking good aren't they? Well chuffed! How are yours coming along?

So jealous. Mine are just little seedlings sitting on the windowsill in paper pots.

I have tiny tomato seedlings sitting on the windowsill. I'm turning them every day but they're getting very very leggy. They still only have their baby seed leaves and no true leaves - should I repot them anyway to stop them getting any leggier, or wait for the real leaves?

You could try putting them outside on a sunny day. It's mainly light they need, although obviously warmth helps too!

I've got my toms on the kitchen window sill with some silver foil taped onto a piece of cardboard that's propped up behind the seed trays. Read 'somewhere' that the foil reflects the sun back at the plants so they don't go leggy, it does seem to work as well.
