Just started raising veg this year and wondered if anyone could advise me about the use of softened water to water my crops. I have an outside tap that I'll have to use when my butts eventually get empty but this is fed from water that first goes through my water softener. Will using this cause me any problems in my veg plot?

Have to say this is odd I work in the building industry and having an outside tap running thow a purifier isnt somthing i see everyday ,well never seen it But If you Have to use it then do... I can't see a problem Hard to say as there are many types of water softeners around and they all change the water in different ways .saying that just adding feed to your water/tank should fix this . All this is a educated guess btw :P

I don't know about problems with the plants but it does seem a bit of a waste of resources to a) use a water softener on outside water and b) use tap water at all in the garden if you can avoid it. Obviously you're stuck with the set up you've got on your water but would it be possible to install more water butts so that you can use that instead, you'll be saving money too (especially if you can get them cheap off your council) as you won't be wasting additional salt or whatever you have to put in your softener.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
