  • Too late for potatoes

Is it too late to start sprouting potatoes now? I'm starting very late this year due to house-moving issues. I'm planning to grow them in containers outdoors.

I'm a newbie, just finished renovating an old house with a complete tip of a garden. I had some spuds chitting on the windowsill, planted them in containers this weekend along with a bunch of unchitted ones that I bought the same day.

Its never to late for tatties, mid April they say, but colder climates end of April. Give it a go, you've nothing to loose.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Plant them asap. I wouldn't waste time getting them to chit first.

If you think about it you should be able to plant them up till around August......If you want homegrown new pots for Christmas you're meant to plant them around August time but remember to keep them frost free.

I agree - don’t waste time chitting. Get them in. But you’ll be fine - here in the West Country, anyway, I can plant my spuds in June and they’ll still do well. This is especially true when (like me) you're growing all or most in containers, because of course you can protect those from frost at the very end of the season, thus giving you another few weeks of growing time.

Speaking of spud pots - I am desperately looking for a source (mail order, preferably) of really cheap pots suitable for growing potatoes in. I’ve already got about 40, I admit, but the thing is, somehow, I’ve ended up with dozens of seed potatoes this year, so I have run out of containers! Any suggestions?

ive just planted mine in pots very large ones, they are covered with about 5 inch of soil/compost mix then as they grow more earth is added like earthing up in the garden. you can force potatoes in the green house a few months early or protect against frost if growing late, if your green house is heated grow all year round. new spuds at christmas yummy.

Mine are going in at the end of this week. I wouldnt worry, i dont bother chitting most of mine! They grow just the same.

                  Good luck.

How about using a cheapo bag of compost, self contained potato bag, just cut the top off.

Ive just planted my main crop at the allotment today. Instead of digging a trench, I used a bulb planter and dropped a seed potato into each hole. Not sure if they will be deep enough? Will of course earth up when sprouts start coming through.

I'm putting mine in on Tuesday. "It will be a good day to plant potatoes" according to that Moon Planting thingy.
