  • Yellow Mange Tout - Planting Out

Birdie Wife gave me some lovely yellow mange tout which I planted in little paper pots and popped onto the windowsill 10 days ago. They're running rampant, but look wonderful.

I'm in the NE of Scotland, can I plant these out yet or can you suggest something in the interim? Not sure how much longer the paper pots will do the job as they're getting really big.

I haven't grown them myself but generally speaking, peas are farily hardy. Just make sure you harden them off. It's usually beans that are tetchy about the weather.

Should I perhaps put them in the unheated greenhouse for a couple of days? Just built it and have still to work out how to hang/attach the door (See other posting if anyone can assist).

            Hi amanda,
I can't offer much advice as I haven't planted mine out yet and it's the first time I've tried them but it's great they are romping away! Are they hardened off? Maybe try getting half of them them into the ground under protection as pea roots don't like disturbance - paper pots are great but the roots with be trying to get downwards. Put the other half in the greenhouse to hedge your bets!

              Hey Bridie

Yes, got a little carried away with planting, but they're looking great.

I've got some that I started off in root trainers and have now moved into a deep pot in the greenhouse. Not grown this type before, any idea how tall they get?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Birdie says tall, but not sure how tall. I got this from the seed website:

                  'Golden Sweet' Yellow-Podded Mange-tout pea

We have grown many mange-tout peas (if you've not tried them, you eat the wide flat pods) over the years but this one has always stood out head and shoulders above the others. It is a superb mange-tout pea, with beautiful yellow pods, tall productive vines, and a delicious crisp flavour.

The flowers are purple, & the pods are a wonderful lemon yellow colour, easy to see for picking, and great both raw in salads or gently steamed or stirfried as a vegetable.

I'm growing these for the first time as well. The seeds are up at the lottie but I seem to remember that the instructions said that they grow about two metres tall.

I haven't sown mine yet - better get a move on, eh?
