  • Seed / Plant spacing

Seed packets all seem to specify sowing / planting out in rows.

How would I best translate these spacings to plant in staggered rows (block planting) to increase planting density but not overcrowd.

There must be some strange formula ?

    Row width / 1.5

Hi Maf, it all depends on what you're planting

I use block planting not rows (usually). There's no magic formula: if a plant has to be 6 inches apart, then just plant them 6 inches apart each way. Same as for 2 inches apart etc.
Just be sure to leave yourself room to get in between your crops to hoe, weed, harvest.

When you block plant you can actually make the 'rows' a little nearer if you are staggering the planting ( domino 5 style) .
We found this worked especially well in the raised beds- you just need to keep an eye out for fungal diseases which tend to occur a bit more with the closer, intensive growing.
