  • Tote Bags

I have 2 tote bags (big plastic things that hold a cubic meter of building sand.

Was going to cut them down, fill with soil and plant courgettes in one and Butternuts in t'other.

Question is how deap should I fill them ?

Well if nothing else you have told us what them big bags are called .
I would have thought that half full is enough nobody will ever pinch them jacob

I'd go for spuds in one and a courgette butternut mix in another.

Companion planting says not to mix spuds and squashes though.

I'd also not cut them, but fold down the sides and plant. Will keep more moisture in.

Half filling would be the depth I'd plant them as well.

                  Really ? 1/2 a metre deep ? Thats a lot of muck !

Could I fit 2 butternut and 2 courgettes in a cube then ?

I've heard both are hungry/thirsty so I was gonna line the bottom of the bags with shredded newspaper and half composted (read not composted at all but rather slimey) stuff from the heap.

I suppose it depends on how much muck you have.

Anyway - I said I would fold the sides down, making half a metre height - and half fill - so that's 1/4 m. Plenty deep enough. Sorry if I wasn't clear but wasn't on best form last night.

Jolly good idea to line with newspaper and half composted stuff; if you can add in a shovel or 2 of manure they should be in 7th heaven.

I would fit 4 in there if it were me; but then again I am renowned for my tightness with plant spacings. With squashes, it's the above ground space that they seem to need rather than the below round space. So, try and train them away from each other, feed and water them regularly and they should be fine.

I've just looked at the spacings from Hessayon book, and it says 12 inches growing room [for cucumbers, but the same principle applies] and 18 in between plants. So, that takes you just short of the 1m square. But, you have the extra depth [it sayd 12 inches and you would have 18 going on the above] so they will have space to expand downwards.

                    Hope that helps.
