  • Tomato Potato, anyone?

I've been reading about grafting a tomato plant onto a potato plant, to maximise space. Has anyone here tried it? I quite fancy having a go!

There was a bit about it in a previous thread in this forum, it was about grafted tomatoes - Snadger made a 'joke' about it. Try the search facility!

Cheeky b*gger! That wasn't a joke.......... it was for real and they are called Tomtaters!

Yes I did graft one myself many moons ago, just as an experiment.

With the new potato leaved varieties of tomato like Tamina it should be a doddle.

Rub out all the eyes on your spud apart from one. Once the shoot breaks the surface plant a suitable tomato next to it.(Thats the knack, having them both with a similar width of stem!) Wait until the both reach about 6 to 8 inches then splice the two together with an upward diagonal cut in the tomato and a downward diagonal cut in the potato. Wrap the splice with string to hold it together. Once the splice has taken the tomato can be severed from it's roots and the top of the potato foliage can be cut off, lo and behold you have a Tomtater!

Theoretically you should be able to harvest tomatoes throughout the season at at the end of season dig the plant up and harvest the spuds!

thanks all; sounds like a super experiment to try this year; particularly as I've got a few potato plant coming up that i didn't actually plant [obviously missed these when digging up the harvest last year.

You know how it is, you always have more tomatoes to prick out than what you can use and you don't want to throw them away..........at least that's why I had a bit play about.
I've just given my spare tomatoes away but another thing you can do with them is pot them up into a 5 inch pot and take the growing tip out, one leaf beyond the first truss for a few early tomatoes on the staging

Just planted my potato. Have a range of Tommie seedlings in greenhouse so will hopefully be able to find a suitable partner for it once it has grown. Potato in a pot at the moment, but I will transfer to compost bag when I get to splicing stage. Will take pics and keep you posted.

These are actually sold by at least one plantsman!

Here's the link.........but they don't tell you how they do it so you'll just have to experiment like I did!

I'd be quite intrigued to try this, but I don't think I'll take the risk.

My young kids might well spot a potato 'apple', think it's a spliced tomato, and eat it!!
