  • beetroot germination

Hello all, what's the average time for seed germination of beetroot? Google tells me they like salty soil (seaside) which mine is not (it's very alkaline), but I seem to remember giving up on a row last year and just after I'd prepared for another sowing, they started to appear. Same very slow start this year - 3 or 4 weeks and about 2 seedlings showing.
    Cheers, Sue.

Last year I sowed mine in cell trays in the cold greenhouse, and planted them out onto the lottie when big enough. I had an excellent crop, and most of my stuff is now started in trays or pots as they just disappear, or get eaten by pests if I sow direct onto the plot.

Don't know what the average time is SueE, but mine took 9 days outdoors.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I popped some Boltardy and Golden Detroit seeds into trays last Sunday and placed them onto a windowsill. They made an appearance this moring (yippee!) so 6 days for me.

I planted mine in the ground last weekend. The radish used to mark the rows are showing, but no beetroot yet.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Just looked up on our site...we sowed our Boltardy in the ground on April 10 and they started to germinate on April 18, so 8 days for ours.

10 days is probably a reasonable average. 6 or 7 is preferable, however, and shows that conditions are more suitable. Remember that the majority of beetroot varieties will bolt if it's too chilly.

Like Amanda above, I sowed last weekend and my Boltardy came through yesterday - we have had some good temperatures this week.
