  • Which herbs around tomato plant?

I heard on this very site about this. Putting herbs around the tomato plant. So which would people recommend? I have alsorts. I would really like to do this to conserve space and is a really handy idea.

    coriander/mint/rosemary/spinach/parsley/basil/dill tetra/garlic chive?

This will live outside by the way, i have no greenhouse.

Basil, Onion Family, Nasturtium, Marigold, Asparagus, Carrot, Parsley, Cucumber, Mint

    are all recommended.

Bear in mind, that basil will attract the greenfly to it and away from the tom plant; so you might need another for eating.

I always plant Tagetes around mine. I've been doing it for so long I've forgotton why, something to do with bugs, pollination probably. They seem to be good companions and add a splash of colour!

It's a companion plant thing Snadger, they attract away from the tomatoes - and look pretty also!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Always plant basil and marigolds and often parsley with toms. The marigolds are fantastic at keeping the whitefly away ( which love toms and basil) it works for brassicas too. Marigolds also attract hoverflies (that attack greenfly) and bees to pollinate your toms.

Cool, I'm going to put garlic chives and marigolds with mine
Must get sowing those poor neglected marigolds so they will be up by the time I plant out the toms lol
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

I have some marigolds which I hope will come on in time for alongside the toms for the plot. I have some basil too, but I was going to keep that in pots at home for cooking.

I would echo the advice from others

I put intersperse toms with Parsley, Basil, Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Onions and Garlic - I also put carrots in the some patch as the onions/garlic deter carrot fly

You need to avoid close planting with Potato (due to danger of blight as in same family), Cabbage, Cauliflower and Beans
