Hi all, noob AXJ here
Having had great results with toms in grow bag on a roof top in London, I am here in the Basque country giving it my best shot again.
I am not an expert gardener by any stretch of the imagination, but I do find that give the plants some soil and water it is amazing what can be achieved. I hope that it is the same in Spain.
In the past I have even had sweetcorn growing on my roof garden. That said, I now have less room.
As this is the beginning of the growing season for me axj in Spain, and I guess for most gardeners in Europe, I thought I would share my experiences from scratch, doing my best to get a good drop of toms.
I have started out with simple seed tray and Lycopersicon sculentum (cherry toms) and tomato marmande tremporano (what I would call normal toms).
Using E.U. standard potting soil. I have transplanted them into 1.2 litre pots, and they seem to be doing very well. I have an south-east facing wall and also a north-west facing wall. So, the competition is on. Which AXJ tomatoes are going to do best. I will transplant them to larger pots, maybe 3 litres in due course, so far so good.
I also have pimentos on the go, in the exact same location, potting compost and containers. I am going to ignore the advice given by USA web sites, and I will keep you posted how it goes.
Growing in a limited space is an xtreem challenge, I hope that my ignorant experience will shed light in the realities of getting a harvest from a balcony, or window ledge.
The USA forums seem to suggest that large containers are required, I think it is the everything is bigger in Texas mentality... not necessarily required.
I would be very interested in any one's experience growing tomatoes in limited space. I am think about some hanging baskets, any details will be very welcome.
