  • AXJ in Spain Container Tomatoes

    Hi all, noob AXJ here

Having had great results with toms in grow bag on a roof top in London, I am here in the Basque country giving it my best shot again.

I am not an expert gardener by any stretch of the imagination, but I do find that give the plants some soil and water it is amazing what can be achieved. I hope that it is the same in Spain.

In the past I have even had sweetcorn growing on my roof garden. That said, I now have less room.

As this is the beginning of the growing season for me axj in Spain, and I guess for most gardeners in Europe, I thought I would share my experiences from scratch, doing my best to get a good drop of toms.

I have started out with simple seed tray and Lycopersicon sculentum (cherry toms) and tomato marmande tremporano (what I would call normal toms).

Using E.U. standard potting soil. I have transplanted them into 1.2 litre pots, and they seem to be doing very well. I have an south-east facing wall and also a north-west facing wall. So, the competition is on. Which AXJ tomatoes are going to do best. I will transplant them to larger pots, maybe 3 litres in due course, so far so good.

I also have pimentos on the go, in the exact same location, potting compost and containers. I am going to ignore the advice given by USA web sites, and I will keep you posted how it goes.

Growing in a limited space is an xtreem challenge, I hope that my ignorant experience will shed light in the realities of getting a harvest from a balcony, or window ledge.

The USA forums seem to suggest that large containers are required, I think it is the everything is bigger in Texas mentality... not necessarily required.

I would be very interested in any one's experience growing tomatoes in limited space. I am think about some hanging baskets, any details will be very welcome.

size of container / stake questions

I've just been trying to work out what size containers to use for my tomatoes too, so thanks for posting this!

I have a choice between the standard bucket size (the orange ones from B&Q!) or those flexible tubtrug things (26 litres). I am planting cherry-sized tomatoes - sun baby and tumbling tom, which will be tumbling out of the container perhaps?! I was thinking one to a bucket and was wondering if I could get two in a trug? Gonna put cucumber in trugs too, if that's a good idea...?

The other question is what should I use to stake them with? I have bamboo canes but am not sure they will be strong enough? Also, I know I have to stake the sun baby as they are cordon / indeterminate, but - does anyone have any suggestions for the tumbling tom? Are they best staked or just tumbling out of the container, attractively as I envisage it...? Should I lift the container above ground level to give them more tumbling room - could pop the container up on a raised bed or on bricks or something?

So many questions! Have searched past threads on here and got some valuable info but am still scratching my head about these things so any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

goodness me, if I had to go to 26 litre tubs, it would have to be a jolly big a fruitsom tomato to make this axj happy. I am working on using window ledge and a small balcony. My biggest problem is that the balcony, which could take maybe two tubs gets some very serious mountain winds from time to time, are tomato plants resilient to strong gusts?
